Salsberry’s Record Highlights Tulane’s Friday Track and Field Action

HOUSTON & AZUSA, Calif. – A busy weekend of action for the Tulane track and field program continued on Friday with full slates in both sites of competition for the Green Wave. Day one of the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational got underway in Houston as the Bryan Clay Invitational continued with day two after the opening action yesterday. Tulane posted more success today, as after securing two new program records last night, Cara Salsberry notched another today in the hammer throw.
At the Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, day one of the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational commenced. Cara Salsberry shined in her two throwing events for Tulane, most notably breaking her own program record for the hammer throw. Today, she hurled a distance of 59.54m to win event and best the program mark of 59.22m that she set just last week in College Station, Texas. Her mark is also 53rd nationally across all of Division I. Not done there, Salsberry was the runner-up in the discus with a mark of 50.03m, which checks in as the second-best distance in program history. She trails only the record holder, Jelena Jurlina and her mark of 55.27m from May 2004.
A few other competitors added top-10 results in field competitions. Brianna Brand placed ninth in the women's long jump with her mark of 5.42m. Sofie Groeninger was just behind in 10th with a 5.41m. Cosette Fleury was 29th at 4.43m to round out the trio of athletes. In the women's pole vault, Presley Wolfe placed sixth with her mark of 3.73m. Other finishes for Tulane in field events included Quin Tandeih notching a 29.18m in the discus to place 16th with Sofia Caruso just behind in 17th at 28.69m. In the men's hammer throw, Aiden Yang was 13th with his distance of 35.32m.
On the track, Marissa Gordon was the top performer with her time of 56.33 in the women's 400m, placing sixth. In the men's 400m, Alexander Montoro delivered a 51.52 to finish 18th. In the women's 100m prelims, Bella Carroll ran a 12.35 to place 18th. A quartet of Tulane runners competed in the men's 100m prelims, led by Andrew Bamberg in 20th with a time of 11.04. Noah Warren was 23rd with a time of 11.13, and Christian McGuire placed 27th with a mark of 11.38. Rounding out the Houston contingent today is Jay Bowles in 29th with a time of 11.86.
Out in California at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Tulane followed a successful day one of distance competition with another day of impactful distance performances. In the morning, Morgan Matthews ran a 17:25.41 in the women's 5,000m open B race. She finished 50th, and Elise Brown was 67th with a time of 17:35.91. In the men's 5,000m open B race, Gilbert Rono ran a 14:16.26 to finish in third place.
The afternoon portion of the schedule saw the men's and women's 800m races. In the men's open B race, Samuel Cohen placed fourth with a time of 1:51.19, landing him at eighth in program history. Jalen St. Fort notched a time of 1:52.47, which is 10th in program history as he finished in 23rd. Tulane featured competitors in two of the women's 800m races with a pair running in the open A race. Jasper Newton finished 10th with her mark of 2:09.43, which is also 10th in program history. Maria Alduan was 44th with a time of 2:11.44. In the open B race, Eliza Brand was fifth with a time of 2:11.22.
Tulane saw action in two more races during the evening slate. In the women's 5,000m open A race, the Wave notched a pair of performances that checked into the program's all-time top 10. Dana Rojas Vazquez delivered a time of 16:52.11 to finish in 42nd in the event, and Alex Sharp was 52nd with her mark of 16:56.12. They are now sixth and seventh in program history, respectively. Rounding out the competitors for Tulane today was Zach Van Houten, who placed 99th in the men's 5,000m open A race with his time of 14:33.62.
Competition concludes in both meets tomorrow. In Houston, Tulane will see action in sprints and field events with more distance races to come in California.
