KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Tulane women's golf team posted the third-lowest team total in program history Monday in grabbing a share of the first-round lead at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Women's Intercollegiate.
With four of the Green Wave's golfers nestled in the top 25, the team carded an opening-round 297 and stands tied for the lead in the 19-team field with Campbell and Miami. The 297 total is the third-lowest team total in school history and is the team's best round of the year by nine strokes.
The team leaders hold a one-stroke advantage over fourth-place South Florida (298) and a seven-stroke advantage over fifth-place Mississippi State (304).
Seniors Meghan Bolger and Catalina Lara each tallied Tulane's low round of the day, a one-over-par 73. Lara's 73 was her low round of the season. The duo is currently tied for eighth place, five strokes behind tournament leader Kelly Lagedrost of South Florida.
Also playing well for Tulane is junior Pam Buff and freshman Kathy Schafer. Buff stands in a tie for 16th place with a first-round 75, while Schafer is tied for 23rd with a 76. Sophomore Pia Alamaki fired an opening-round 79 in her first action of the season. She is currently tied for 45th place.
The 54-hole event, which is hosted by the College of Charleston, concludes Tuesday. The tournament is being contested at Kiawah Island's Oak Point Golf Course, a par 72, 5,843-yard layout.
