NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Six players scored in double figures, led by Janell Burse's second straight double-double, as No. 24 Tulane won its 10th consecutive game with a 104-75 triumph over West Virginia in the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic on Tuesday.
Burse, named the DoubleTree's Most Valuable Player, led all scorers with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots to give the Green Wave its school-record 10th straight victory. Tulane's (10-0) previous best run was nine consecutive wins set in 1996-97 and tied last season. West Virginia fell to 4-5 with the loss.
The victory over West Virginia also improved Tulane to 27-3 in non-conference games at Fogelman Arena under head coach Lisa Stockton and 4-0 against Big East schools this season, as the Wave had previously posted wins over Miami (75-66), Georgetown (72-62) and Providence (81-57). Burse posted a double-double in all four Big East games and averaged 23.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in those contests.
Tulane opened the game with a bang, holding West Virginia to just two field goals over the first 10 minutes and led 26-6 at the 10:10 mark. The Mountaineers refused to fold, however, and rallied to pull within seven, 42-35, at the 1:42 mark, before the Wave closed the half with a 9-2 burst and led 51-37 at the break.
West Virginia's Christin Annie, who had a career-high 23 points, hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half, cutting the Tulane lead to 53-43. But the Wave responded with a 21-6 run in which seven different Tulane players scored for a 74-49 lead at the 10:13 mark. The Mountaineers would get as close as 18, but the Green Wave steadily increased its cushion and held a 96-63 advantage with 3:35 left to play before claiming the 29-point win.
The 104 points scored was Tulane's third-highest single-game point total in school history, as six Wave players scored in double figures. In addition to Burse's game-high, All-American Grace Daley chipped in 23 points, while senior Fabrecia Roberson added 12 points and five assists. Taryn Turnbull scored a career-high 10 points, while Britt Themann and Sarah Goree also added 10 points. Goree also registered four assists and a game-best three steals.
Burse was joined on the DoubleTree Classic All-Tournament team by teammates Daley and Roberson, as well as West Virginia's Christin Annie. Providence's Monika Roberts and Lehigh's Anne Tierney were also All-Tournament selections.
Tulane returns to action on Friday, Dec. 31, as the 24th-ranked Green Wave play host to 11th-ranked LSU at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 12 noon.
