
Men's Tennis Upsets No. 25 Tulsa

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Christoph Ortner claimed a win at the No. 4 singles spot to lift the No. 38 Tulane men's tennis team to a 4-2 upset of No. 25 Tulsa at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
With Tulane holding a slight 3-2 lead, and Green Wave freshman Esat Tanik trailing 6-5 in a decisive third set at No. 3 singles, Ortner twice held off match point to post a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 win over Tulsa's Steve Timperley at the No. 4 spot.
Tulane jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by claiming the opening doubles point. Tanik and Mikko Viljanen were first off the court, claiming an 8-3 win over the Tulsa team of Nenad Toroman and Pawel Sebastyanski at the No. 1 spot. The Tulane duo of Ortner and Dennis Lundberg clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Timperley and Dane McGregor at the No. 2 position. Tulane finished off doubles with a win in the No. 3 match, as Derya Rose and Jon Monk were 8-4 winners against the Tulsa duo of Juan Bertoldi and Sean Monk.
The Green Wave increased its lead to 2-0 after Lundberg notched a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win over Toroman at the No. 1 spot. Tulsa pulled a match back when McGregor turned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Viljanen at No. 2 singles. Mattias Westerberg gave Tulane a 3-1 advantage with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Micah Zomer at the No. 5 spot, before Tulsa again pulled to within one. Bertoldi posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Blake Baratz at the No. 6 spot, setting up Ortner's heroics at No. 4 singles. Tanik's match with Sebastyanski at No. 3 singles was not finished after Tulane clinched the dual match win.
Tulane returns to action next weekend, as the Green Wave travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships.
