CINCINNATI - Leading scorer Brandon Spann (New Orleans, La.) went down with an injury 12 minutes into the game and Tulane could not make up for his absence, falling, 105-57, to the University of Cincinnati in Conference USA men's basketball action on Monday evening at the Shoemaker Center.
Tulane (7-13, 0-7 C-USA) had a tough assignment against the five-time defending champions of Conference USA, who had defeated No. 9 Wake Forest on Saturday. The Bearcats (14-6, 4-3) held a 30-15 lead with 7:57 to go in the first half when Spann connected with a shoulder on a pick. The Green Wave's leading scorer, Spann suffered a mild concussion and did not return.
"We came out tentative," Tulane head coach Shawn Finney said. "We were passive at the beginning of the game and then when B-Spann was knocked out, it took us a while to adjust. We rely on him so heavily to do so much for us and we had to adjust to two walk-ons trying to fill in."
Cincinnati proceeded to press the Wave, which had a combined 48 minutes out of a pair of freshman walk-on guards. Justin Amick (Atlanta, Ga.) saw a career-high 32 minutes of action, while Marc Siegel (Lake Forest, Ill.) played a career-best 16 minutes.
"I can't say enough about Marc Siegel," Finney continued. "He played hard and gutsy. I was really pleased with how he played."
The Bearcats built the lead to as many as 32 in the first half, and held a 56-30 advantage at the break.
"This is a game of adversity and we have to learn how to deal with it," Finney said.
The second half brought more adversity for the Green Wave, as Cincinnati guards Kenny Satterfield and Steve Logan led the charge. Logan scored a game-high 18 points, including four three-pointers. Satterfield, meanwhile, became the fourth player in Bearcat history to record a double-double , tallying 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
"Obviously Satterfield is one of the best guards in the league," Finney said. "He shot the ball well and did everything else as well."
The Tulane deficit continued to grow to in the final 20 minutes, with the final margin being the largest lead of the night.
Tulane was led by senior Ledaryl Billingsley (Chicago, Ill.), who scored 15 points and had six rebounds. Junior Linton Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) added 12 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Brandon Brown (Houma, La.) hit double figures with 10 points/
The Green Wave returns home on Saturday, hosting South Florida at Fogelman Arena at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by calling 504-961-WAVE.
