NEW ORLEANS, La. - Sophomore Brandon Spann of the Tulane men's basketball team has been named the Louisiana Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) for the week ending, Dec. 16.
Spann, a 6-foot-1 junior from New Orleans, led the Green Wave to an 87-77 victory over Vanderbilt last Monday. He scored 16 points, nine assists and added a career-high nine rebounds, as he narrowly missed recording just the second triple-double in school history. Spann connected on 6-of-8 shots and was 2-of-2 from behind the 3-point line and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line for the Green Wave.
"Brandon had his best overall game," head coach Shawn Finney said. "Both from a leadership standpoint and by scoring and distributing the basketball. He showed unbelievable leadership of this team."
Spann is currently averaging 14.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He also leads the team with 15 three-pointers and 18 steals.
Spann and the rest of the Green Wave will return to action on Friday after a 10-day break for final exams. Visiting Fogelman Arena for a 7 p.m. contest will be Lipscomb University, which takes a 2-6 record into a Wednesday night contest at North Texas.
"We need to try to get our rhythm back after this 10-day break," Finney said. "Guys need to come focused and ready to play. Lipscomb is a great shooting team and we will have to be ready."
Following the Lipscomb game, the Green Wave will travel to Atlanta to meet Georgia Tech in a nationally-televised Sunday evening game on Fox Sports. Game time is 7 p.m. (Central).
