Baseball Sweeps Sam Houston With 11-1 Win On Sunday

NEW ORLEANS, La.- The Tulane (3-0) baseball team swept Sam Houston State (0-3) with an 11-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The game lasted seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Green Wave took an early lead and never looked back as Steve Shirley hit his first home run of the season in the first inning giving Tulane a 3-0 lead. Shirley was 1-for-2 with five RBI and one run scored.
Tulane went on to score two runs in the third and fourth innings and four in the fifth.
Deuces were wild for Jake Gautreau as he went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, two runs scored and two walks. He also had two stolen bases. Andy Cannizaro sent in two runs and scored two runs, while Anthony Giarratano posted one RBI.
Sam Houston State had 11 hits in the game but only scored one run, driven in by Lawrence Riva in the fourth inning.
Andrew Corona (1-0) got the win for the Wave. He went five innings, scattered seven hits and struck out four in his Tulane debut. Freshmen Joey Charron and Will Walter combined for two scoreless innings.
Bearkat pitcher Nathan Boyd (0-1) got the loss. He went four innings, struck out three and walked four.
