ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A big Saint Louis (13-14, 4-4 C-USA)seventh inning and a solid pitching performance from Wes Jaillet gave the Billikens their second straight win over the Tulane (23-7, 4-4 C-USA) baseball team, 10-6, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win Saint Louis clinched its first-ever series against Tulane.
The seventh inning was trouble for Tulane as reliever and losing pitcher Steven Blades walked the bases loaded and then walked in a run letting SLU within one. A single by Jim Bredenkoetter sent in a pair of runs and Ben Caffey sealed the Saint Louis win with a three-run home run.
It looked like the Wave's game as Tulane took its first lead in the series as they scored a pair of runs in the third inning. Andy Cannizaro hit a bases-clearing triple to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead.
Saint Louis answered with a Nick Steiner three RBI home run into left. Coincidentally, the home run hit by Steiner was the second three-run home run hit in the third inning this weekend. The Billikens added one more run in the fourth.
A pinch hit home run by Nick Bourgeois in the fifth tied the game at four runs each. The long ball by Bourgeois was his first of the season. Cannizaro sent a single up the middle to give TU a 5-4 advantage. On the day Cannizaro was 2-for-5 with a team high three RBI.
Michael Aubrey added a run in the sixth with a solo home run into left.
The winning pitcher was Jaillet who pitched a complete game and struck out a career high 10. He scattered nine hits, the first time in six games TU has been held under 10.
Blades got the loss for Tulane after going two innings. He gave up two hits, four runs and walked four.
The teams wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
