Baseball Sweeps UAB In Extra Innings

NEW ORLEANS, La., -- Matt Groff lined a two-out single in the tenth giving Tulane (39-8, 16-5 C-USA) a 4-3 win and a sweep of UAB (22-23, 5-16 C-USA) on Sunday. With the win, Tulane and Houston share the top spot in Conference USA.
The Wave recorded eight hits as a team, all singles. For the first time this season Tulane posted a win without the help of extra base knocks. The Green Wave is on a season high 10-game winning streak.
In the tenth, James Jurries hit a one-out single on the first pitch from UAB reliever Jon Burgett and immediately stole second. Burgett struck out the next Wave batter. Groff stepped in and proceeded to hit a single over the head of the UAB first baseman allowing Jurries to score. The hit was Groff's only of the afternoon.
This is the 11th time this season Tulane has won in its last at bat and third time this weekend.
The Green Wave pounced on UAB starter Ross Dobbins and put up a pair of quick runs in the first and added one in the third. He allowed only six hits through 8 1/3 innings.
Tulane held a 3-0 lead until Brandon Holmes scored on a ground out in the sixth.
Tulane starter Nick Bourgeois held UAB scoreless through five innings and struck out a total of eight Blazers. Joey Charron entered the game in the eighth after Bourgeois gave up the game-tying two run homer by Brandon Holmes. Charron (3-0) pitched three innings of one hit relief and picked up his third win of the season.
The losing pitcher was Burgett (0-2).
In the game, Andy Cannizaro stole a career high four bases. He has 39 swiped bags on the season and needs five more to break the single season stolen base record at Tulane.
Tulane hosts Memphis for a weekend series beginning on Friday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m.
