NEW ORLEANS, La. -- A bottom of the ninth single by Jay Heintz gave the Tulane (43-8) baseball team a 6-5 victory over Nicholls State (26-30) and maintained its perfect record against Louisiana opponents on Wednesday evening.
The Green Wave was held scoreless until the eighth inning and trailed the Colonels by five runs. The inning began with a Jake Gautreau double into right field and James Jurries followed with a single of his own. The floodgates opened for the Green Wave. They scored five runs on three singles, a sacrifice fly and a walk.
With the game tied at five heading into the ninth, Tulane reliever Joey Charron retired the Nicholls side on two strikeouts and a ground out to first.
Jurries led off the Tulane ninth with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the Nicholls State catcher. With one out, Heintz singled into left, sending in Jurries and the game-winning run.
Heintz was 2-for-5 on the evening with a pair of RBI and one run scored. Jurries was 2-for-3 with a couple of runs scored.
The dramatic win marks the 13th time this season the Green Wave has won a game in its last at bat. The win is Tulane's 14th in a row and is the longest winning streak the Wave has seen under head coach Rick Jones. The Wave finished the regular season with an 11-0 record against instate opponents.
Charron (4-0) got the win for Tulane, his fourth of the season. He went 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up one hit and struck out three. Wave starter Beau Richardson went 6 1/3 innings, gave up five runs and struck out six.
Nicholls State starter Mike Prejean pitched a very strong game until he gave up four runs in the eighth. He went 7 1/3 innings and struck out five. The losing pitcher was Alex Velazquez (3-5). He gave up the lead off single to Jurries in the ninth.
