Michael Kogan Wins Tulane Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Green Wave junior Michael Kogan defeated San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger to complete a sweep of the top flight of singles at the Tulane University Men's Tennis Invitational on Sunday at the Goldring Tennis Stadium. The tourney featured seven schools; in addition to Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Middle Tennessee State, UNO, San Diego State and Southern Miss competed in the event.
Kogan, who is ranked No. 17 in the country, upended the ninth-ranked Maiberger in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to earn the title in top flight singles.
In top flight doubles, Kogan and teammate Victor Romero lost for the second day in a row to Maiberger and his Aztec teammate Ryan Redondo. The San Diego State duo, ranked No. 3 in the nation, came from behind to defeat Tulane's No. 5 ranked tandem, 9-7.
Romero, who is ranked No. 39 in singles, also had a big win on Sunday, defeating LSU's Bryan Fisher, 6-3, 6-2. Fisher is ranked No. 68.
Tulane also earned a victory in the #1 Doubles flight as senior Mattias Westerberg and Hannu Piiroinen teamed up for three victories in the weekend. They defeated Greg Pollack and Rishan Kuruppu in the final on Sunday, 8-6.
In the #1 Singles flight, LSU's Sebastian Rutka took the championship, defeating Redondo from San Diego State, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the #1 Singles Consolation bracket, UNO's Michael Chkroun defeated Brandon Allen from Middle Tennessee State in the final, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
UNO also had a winner in the #2 Singles bracket as Julian de la Maitre defeated teammate Anders Oding, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. In the consolation of that bracket, Middle Tennessee State's Kuruppu defeated his teammate Pollack, 5-7, 6-1, 10-4 in a super tiebreaker.
The Invitational had three flights for both singles and doubles. The top flight in singles and doubles were round-robin events featuring players competing for national rankings. Singles players are guaranteed four matches in the round-robin format.
The "#1" and "#2" Flights are traditional brackets divided according to skill levels.
Tulane returns to action next weekend with the Region III Championship tournament.
