Women's Basketball Picked Third In C-USA Preseason Poll

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team has been picked to finish third in Conference USA, while senior center Teana McKiver was a preseason all-league selection, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

The preseason poll and preseason All-Conference USA team were voted on by the league's 14 head women's basketball coaches.

"We're very excited about the start of the season," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "The players have come in with a great attitude and have worked very hard so far during the preseason. We know that Conference USA will be very strong this season, but we are looking forward to the challenge. I think we have a lot of the pieces in place that you need to be successful."

Thanks to McKiver's selection, Tulane is the only school that has had a representative on the preseason All-Conference USA team before each season of league play (the league's first year was the 1995-96 season). McKiver earned All-America honors from Basketball Times and was an All-Conference USA choice last season. She led the Green Wave in scoring, while ranking third nationally in field goal percentage. The only Conference USA player to rank among the Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots, McKiver has already been selected as a preseason All-American by Street & Smith's.

Tulane was third in the preseason Conference USA poll, following only TCU, last season's regular season champion, and Cincinnati, last season's C-USA Tournament winner. The Green Wave return four starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's team that won an impressive 24 games last year - the third-highest victory total in school history.

The Green Wave begin the 2002-03 season with an exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars on Sunday, Nov. 10 before facing cross-town rival Xavier of Louisiana in a second exhibition on Sunday, Nov. 17. The Wave open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 22 on the road against James Madison.
