Tulane-James Madison Game Notes
The Tulane women's basketball team opens the 2002-03 regular season on Friday, as the Green Wave travel to face James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
The game is also the season-opener for James Madison and marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Friday's contest will mark the sixth time in nine season-openers under head coach Lisa Stockton that the Wave will begin the campaign on the road. Tulane is 6-2 in its first game of the year under Stockton, including 3-2 in road openers.
"We're excited to get the season underway," Stockton said. "We have had some very good practices leading up to this weekend, but it will be nice to see how we react to an actual game situation. This could be a very good year for us, but we know we have to come out ready to play on Friday."
Tulane posted a pair of wins in its two exhibition contests, topping the Houston Jaguars 81-56 before claiming an 80-66 win over cross-town rival Xavier. Teana McKiver averaged 14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the two games, while Gwen Slaughter added 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds. Kelly Nadeau also chipped in double figures, averaging 12.0 points, 4.5 steals and 4.0 rebounds in the two games.
Last season, Tulane posted a 24-11 record and reached the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive season. The Wave upset No. 18 Colorado State in the first round and won at least 20 games for the sixth straight year.
James Madison compiled a 16-12 record last season, finishing fourth in the Colonial Athleitc Association. The Dukes return six players from that team, including preseason All-CAA selections Shanna Price and Nadine Morgan. In its only exhibition of the season, JMU posted a 72-56 win over the Melbourne Tigers team from Australia.
Following Friday's game, Tulane will continue its season-opening road trip, traveling to Oregon State and Portland over the Thanksgiving break. The Wave open the home portion of the 2002-03 campaign on Thursday, Dec. 5, when the team welcomes Alabama State to Fogelman Arena.
