NEW ORLEANS - UCF junior Marius Boyd grabbed a rebound and hit a layup with less than a second left in the game to defeat Indiana State 50-49 in the championship game of the University Hoops Classic in Tulane's Fogelman Arena.
Boyd's field goal, just his second of the game, came after a Roberto Morentin miss and gave UCF a perfect 3-0 record in the tournament. The Golden Knights improved to 4-1 with the win while Indiana State fell to 2-2.
Tournament MVP Ray Abellard led the Golden Knights with 13 points, including three three-pointers. David Moss led Indiana State with 14 points while Marcus Howard added 10 for the Sycamores.
Prior to Boyd's heroics, Jake Sams' layup had given Indiana State a 49-48 advantage with 2:18 left on the clock.
UCF built a 10-point advantage in the first half to lead 33-23 at halftime before the Sycamores came back with a 10-4 spurt to start the half and cut the lead to four points. A Howard jumper at 11:10 and a Moss layup put the Sycamores ahead by one and they built the advantage to five with just over seven minutes left.
Abellard tied the score with a three-pointer at 4:28 and neither team had more than a one-point advantage the rest of the way.
The University Hoops Classic All-Tournament team was led by Abellard, the tournament MVP and included ISU's Howard, Brandon Brown and Brandon Spann of Tulane, Brandon Griffin of Southeast Missouri State and Clay Tucker of Wisconsin-Milwaukee comprised the rest of the team.
