NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University senior Britney Hurst was named the Louisiana State Volleyball Player of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association, which selected the 13-member All-Louisiana team.
In addition, Green Wave setter Kelli Dickson was named the state Rookie of the Year by the organization. Hurst also collected all-state first team honors while Dickson was joined by Deva Fowler on the all-state second team.
Hurst, who earned All-Conference USA second team honors, set single-season records for Tulane in kills (692) and digs (464), while posting five of the top 10 single-match kill totals in school history. She set the Tulane single-match kills record with 37 against Bowling Green and the Green Wave three-game match kills record with 30 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette.
Dickson, meanwhile, has been a bit of a surprise in 2002. Signed as an all-around athlete who was supposed to be groomed into a backup setter spot and play back-row defense, Dickson saw action much sooner than expected when starting setter Katie Case went down with an injury early in the year. Dickson averaged 10.55 assists per game while chipping in with 62 kills, 250 digs, 27 aces and 26 blocks. Her 1,351 assists in 2002 ranks fifth in the Tulane single-season record book and seventh on the school career chart. She was also named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
Fowler, a sophomore middle blocker, was second on the team with 396 kills, while adding 36 aces and 142 digs. Her 147 blocks led the Green Wave.
Tulane finished the 2002 season with a 21-14 mark, the Wave's most wins since the 1992 season.
