NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University had another big offensive night on Monday, rolling to a 94-70 victory over Jackson State in men's basketball action at Fogelman Arena.
Tulane, which evened its record at 5-5, had piled up 103 points in a Friday victory over Savannah State. Jackson State drops to 1-8, with all of its losses coming on the road.
Continuing its red-hot shooting from Friday night, the Green Wave buried 59.4 percent (19-of-32) of its first-half shots to jump to a 54-31 advantage at the break. Tulane also used its press to force 10 first-half turnovers by the Tigers, while its defense held Jackson State to 33.3 percent (13-of-39) shooting.
"Our press caused them some problems early in the game," Tulane coach Shawn Finney said. "And that gave us a big spark on offense. We played with a lot of emotion and intensity."
Tulane scored the first eight points of the game, and built leads of 16-2, 24-4 and 30-6, before Jackson State could regain its feet and attempt to battle back.
Brandon Brown led Tulane with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Spann added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds. Nick Sinville chipped in with 15 points while Wayne Tinsley tallied season-highs of 11 points and eight rebounds.
After pushing the margin to 30 at 66-36 with 16:44 to go, the Wave saw the Tigers claw back into the match. Reggie Taylor (11 points) scored five points and the Wave turned it over six times as Jackson State made a 10-0 run to cut the margin to 20 at 66-46 with 13:35 to go.
"I was disappointed in the second half," Finney said. "We lost our intensity and got very careless with the ball. We still have a lot to work on, much of it the mental aspect of basketball."
However, Tulane would build the margin back as high as 28 at 87-59 with 4:04 to go on a pair of free throws from Spann. The Tigers rallied to within 20 one more time against the Green Wave reserves.
Tulane dominated the glass, 52-34, but the Wave committed 16 second-half turnovers and 23 in the game. Tulane shot 55.9 percent (33-of-59) for the game, while holding the Tigers to 35.0 percent (28-of-80) shooting.
"Everybody did a great job of rebounding the basketball," Finney continued. "We had a lot of guys crashing the glass and everybody was very active."
Seven different players tallied five or more rebounds in the game for the Wave.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, battling LSU in the Nokia Sugar Bowl Classic at 2:30 p.m. in the New Orleans Arena. The first game of the doubleheader, which tips off at noon, features Oklahoma and Mississippi State. Tickets are available by calling 504-861-WAVE.
