NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday as the Green Wave welcome UNC Greensboro, Boston College and SMU for the seventh annual DoubleTree Classic.
Tulane will face UNC Greensboro in the opening game of the tournamen, with tip-off scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Boston College and SMU will follow in the second game at approximately 2:30 p.m. The winners of the first two games will face off for the DoubleTree Classic championship at approximately 3 p.m. on Sunday, after the losers play in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
The Tulane-UNC Greensboro game is a rematch of the very first DoubleTree Classic game, which Tulane won 89-46 on Dec. 28, 1996. UNC Greensboro is the first visiting team to make two appearances in the DoubleTree Classic.
"We have another great tournament set up for our fans," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "UNC Greensboro and Boston College both had 20-win seasons last year and Boston College is ranked in the Top 20 this year. SMU has already posted an upset win over Oklahoma this year. I think you'll see four very competitive and hard-fought games."
Tulane has never lost a game in the DoubleTree Classic, posting a perfect 12-0 mark with wins over such teams as Colorado State, Maine, West Virginia, Hartford and Virginia. The Green Wave enter Saturday's game with a 6-2 record after three-straight wins over Drake, Southeastern Louisiana and Arkansas State.
UNC Greensboro enters the weekend with a 4-2 record, which includes a win over Conference USA foe East Carolina. The Spartans opened the season with a loss to Virginia Tech before posting four straight victories. In their last game, UNCG dropped a 71-64 decision to Florida International.
Following the weekend tournament, Tulane will travel to face nationally-ranked Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., on Thursday, Jan. 2.
