NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team dropped just five games in 12 singles matches to cruise to a pair of 7-0 wins over Conference USA rival Southern Miss and in-state rival Southern at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
The two victories improve Tulane to 4-3, snapping a three-match losing streak in the process.
Tulane started the day with a 7-0 triumph over league foe Southern Miss, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead by claiming the opening doubles point with 8-1 wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In singles play, the Green Wave dropped just four games despite playing a shuffled line-up that saw two of the Wave's top four players out of action.
Freshman Maria Ivanov, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this year, cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Southern Miss' Jennifer Sibille. Three Tulane players, Joyce Bergman, Lucy Wood and Karen Duchin, each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins. Bergman claimed the No. 2 singles spot over USM's Olivia Berry, while Wood won at No. 4 singles over Jessica Olson. Duchin, playing in her first collegiate match, was a winner at No. 5 singles over USM's Pam Miller. Tulane's Anneli Axsater posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sara Anne Harrison at No. 3 singles.
Tulane followed up the win over Southern Miss with an even more impressive 7-0 showing over Southern. The Wave lost just one game in singles play, posting five 6-0, 6-0 wins. Tulane also jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by claiming the opening doubles point.
In singles play, Julie Morris, Joyce Bergman, Anneli Axsater, Maiko Cook and Lucy Wood each posted straight set victories without dropping a game. Ana Maria Saaibi was the lone Tulane player to lose a game in singles play, but she still recorded a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Southern's Kelli Norris at No. 3 singles.
"We were able to get everyone some work today, which was nice," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "We won the match against Southern in just under 90 minutes, which is pretty impressive. Hopefully we can build on this and continue to improve throughout the season."
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, March 2, as the Green Wave play host to in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette.
