Women's Tennis Falls To No. 4 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Despite a win from freshman Maria Ivanov, the Tulane women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 4 Vanderbilt in Nashville on Sunday.
Tulane, ranked 41st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, falls to 2-1 with the loss, while Vanderbilt improves to 3-0. The Commodores are listed 4th nationally in the latest ITA rankings.
The Green Wave's lone win of the game came at No. 2 singles, with Ivanov claiming a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Vanderbilt's Katie Blaszak. Vanderbilt won the other five singles matches in straight sets.
The Commodores took an early 1-0 lead by claiming the opening doubles point. The Commodore team of Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos posted an 8-3 win over Tulane's Joyce Bergman and Maiko Cook at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 doubles, the Commodore's Burson and Menees were 8-6 winners over Tulane's Ivanov and Ana Saaibi. Vanderbilt also took the No. 3 doubles match, with the team of Miller and Schmandt posting an 8-0 win over Julie Morris and Lucy Wood.
At No. 1 singles, Riske posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tulane's Morris, while Schmandt was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Bergman at the No. 3 spot. Menees posted a win at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Saaibi, while Audra Falk gave Vandy the No. 5 singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tulane's Anneli Axsater. Tsoubanos was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Cook at No. 6 singles.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 9, as the Green Wave play host to a doubleheader. The Wave will face Southeastern Louisiana at 10 a.m before meeting UNO at approximately 2 p.m. Both matches will be the Goldring Tennis Complex on the Tulane campus.
