NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane women's tennis standouts Maria Ivanov and Julie Morris were each named first-team All-Louisiana by the Louisiana Sports Writers' Association, with Ivanov picking up LSWA Freshman of the Year honors.
In addition, Tulane women's tennis head coach David Schumacher was named LSWA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Despite missing a few matches down the stretch with a minor injury, Ivanov posted a 12-6 record in singles play, finishing the year playing primarily at the No. 1 spot. She also fared well at the No. 2 position, turning in a 6-1 record at that spot in the line-up. She started the season, and indeed her freshman campaign, with six straight victories and with wins in 10 of her first 12 matches. Ivanov was named Conference USA Player of the Week on March 5 and was ranked as high as 87th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Morris, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., finished her junior campaign with a 14-9 overall record, with eight of those wins coming at the No. 1 spot. She also teamed with freshman Ana Saaibi to post an impressive 16-5 showing in doubles. Morris ended the season on a six-match unbeaten streak and has been ranked as high as 83rd by the ITA. She also earned C-USA Player of the Week honors, picking up the award on April 2, while her 14 victories was a team high this year.
In his third season at the helm of the Green Wave program, Schumacher led Tulane to a third-place showing at the Conference USA Tournament. It was the Wave's fourth consecutive Top 3 league finish and third straight under Schumacher. The Wave also recorded 3rd-place showings in 1999 and 2000 before winning its first-ever Conference USA title in 2001.
