Wave Women Win Tulane Cross Country Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University women's cross country team defended its title in the Tulane Invitational by defeating six other teams at Levee Oaks Park Friday. The men's race was won by LSU, followed by Birmingham Southern and then the Green Wave.
Green Wave junior Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic), who won the race last year, finished third on the two-mile course with a time of 12:14.22. The women's individual winner was Paulina Vondrkova from UNO, who won the contest with a time of 11:46.00. Sara Mez, also from UNO, took second place.
In the men's race, LSU's Ben Shumaker was the top collegiate finisher with a time of 15:27.02 on the three-mile course. Senior Adam Leskis (Spokane, Wash.) was the top finisher for the Green Wave with a time of 15:39.50 for sixth place.
Tulane's women won the event with 51 points, narrowly edging the 57 points of UNO. LSU took third place with 61 points, while Birmingham Southern (76 points), Southern Miss (104), Xavier (161) and Mobile (202) rounded out the women's field.
On the men's side, LSU, which had four of the top seven finishers, had 28 points for first place while Birmingham Southern had 43 points for second. Tulane had 76 points while UNO (108) and Xavier (112) took fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Following Lustigova for the Wave was sophomore Megan Whelton (New Orleans, La.), who took fifth place and freshman Lisa Green (Marietta, Ga.) in seventh place. Sophomore Mandy Hopper took 14th place for the Wave.
For the Tulane men, sophomore Will Landry (New Iberia, La.) earned 16th place to follow Leskis.
The overall winner in the men's race was former Tulane standout Solomon Kandie, running as an unattached individual, who covered the course in 14:48.35, nearly 40 seconds faster than Shumaker.
Tulane returns to action next Friday, Sept. 13, at the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss.
