HOUSTON, Texas - It was unorthodox and will not count toward any team scoring, but the Tulane University swimming team got their first taste of success Friday night when they hit the pool for the first time in over a decade at the Bayou City Relays hosted by Rice University.
With members of the Green Wave squad mixing with the Owls' swimmers to form four teams, Tulane and Rice joined forces to compete in several joint relays, including the 6x50-yard flutter kick, the crescendo free relay (50-100-150-200), and the 6x25 free relay.
"They looked good out there tonight," head coach Daniella Irle said. "It was sort of a dress rehearsal tonight. They swam anywhere from seven to eight relays in an hour and a half, and that's a lot of relays for that time frame. But it was good experience, and that's what we came for. We swam hard today, and I was pleased with our performance.
"Rice is very good team and I thought we held our own. Pleased as coaches. We were good technically, and we did a lot of things right. That's really what we were looking to get out of this."
Elizabeth Carey, Monica Jones and Nellie Langeland helped "Team One" win the opening event - the 300-yard butterfly relay - with a time of 3:02.08. The trio also emerged victorious, along with Rice's Laura Arjona, Jacki Corcoran, Andrea Hurn, Corri Kristick and Elaine Lee in the 300-yard freestyle relay (7:57.12), the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.60) and the 400-yard free relay (3:41.02).
Katherin McCoy, Katie McGuire and Maureen Quinn helped "Team Two" claim the titles in the 800-yard free relay (7:57.12) and the 150-yard free relay (1:11.53). Jen Berzinis, Leslie Christian, Taylor Emerson and Amanda Williams helped "Team Three" win the 300-yard backstroke relay (3:05.76), the 400-yard medley relay (4:09.07) and the 600-yard medley relay (6:41.39).
"Team Four", which included Jessica Hughes, Linda McEachrane, Nicole Taheri and Megan Underwood, also claimed three events - winning the 300-yard breastroke relay (3:32.92), the 500-yard freestyle relay (4:48.71) and the 1,500-yard free relay (15:40.28).
The Green Wave returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they go head-to-head with Rice in the first-ever Aquathon. This unique event, held at The Reef, features three competitive legs on the order of a triathlon, and will be scored like a collegiate cross country meet. The race will consist of one-mile, open-water swim, followed by a two-mile run and conclude with another one-mile swim in open water.
