NEW ORLEANS - Tulane has completed its 2004-05 women's basketball recruiting class with the signing of 6-3 forward Dominique Philpots of Riverdale, Ga., head coach Lisa Stockton announced Thursday. Philpots is the fifth signee for Stockton and her staff in the early signing period.
Philpots, a senior at Riverdale High School in the Atlanta suburb of Riverdale, Ga., averaged 13 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game as a junior. She is rated as the No. 16 player in the country at forward by All-Star Girl's Report and is the No. 96 player overall. An All-Region 4-5A, as well as All-Clayton County first team choice last year, Philpots was also a member of All-Tournament team at the 2002 Nike Peachstate event and was a first team Southern Crescent honoree. She earned the All-American Award at the 2003 Primetime Summer Classic. A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter, she is averaging 11 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game during her prep career.
"Dominique reminds me of (former Tulane standout and 2002-03 senior) Gwen Slaughter," Stockton said. "She is a terrific athlete with great quickness who runs the floor like a perimeter player. She is a very active rebounder. Signing her along with (fellow 6-3 post) Alendra Brown really gives this class great size and helps us replace some of the inside presence we lost from last year."
Philpots joins Brown, a 6-3 center from New Orleans, Nikki Luckhurst, a 5-8 guard from Duluth, Ga., Jennifer Sands, a 6-0 guard/forward from Dallas, Texas, and Khadrereil Ferguson, a 5-10 guard from Jackson, La., to make up Stockton's 2004-05 recruiting class.
"I'm pleased with this group of signees," Stockton said. "With the addition of Dominique today, we have filled a spot at every position except point guard. This class is extremely athletic and very versatile."
The Green Wave, which will play its second and final exhibition game of the year Sunday at 2 p.m. versus Xavier at Fogelman Arena, is replacing a trio of seniors from its 2003-04 roster. Stockton and her staff signed four freshmen this year. The regular season gets underway on Friday, Nov. 21 with a game at UL-Monroe while the home opener tips off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25th versus Oregon State. Season tickets are on sale through the Green Wave Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
