NEW ORLEANS, La. - Former Arkansas-Little Rock star Mark Green scored 20 points to lead Global Sports to a 69-54 exhibition victory over Tulane University in men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Fogelman Arena.
Global Sports buried 49.1 percent (27-of-55) of its shots, including 55.6 percent (15-of-27) in the second half. Tulane shot just 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field.
The Green Wave was led by senior Wayne Tinsley, who scored 13 points. Sophomore Quincy Davis added eight points, four rebounds and six blocked shots.
Former Tulane standout Brandon Brown added 11 points and four rebounds for Global Sports.
Tulane trailed 42-27 with 16 minutes to go when freshman Vincent Camper keyed a Green Wave spurt. He found Ben Benfield for a three-pointer, buried a jumper from the right side, and followed up his own miss with a putback to pull the Wave within eight at 42-34 with 14:15 remaining.
However, a dunk by Global's 7-2 behemoth Lorenzo Coleman and a high-arcing three-pointer from former Charlotte-standout Curtis Nash built the bulge back to 13. Tulane would not come within 11 the rest of the way with the deficit growing to 24 on two occasions.
"After the last exhibition we were concerned about toughness, playing intense defense and sharing the ball better," Tulane coach Shawn Finney said. "Tonight we were exposed in those areas."
The Wave defeated Vasda, 80-66, in its exhibition opener last Tuesday.
"Our guys needed a wake-up call to understand how to play at the college level," Finney said. "We still did some good things; they learned some things, and that's what an exhibition is for."
Tulane built a seven-point lead early in the game on a baseline three-pointer by Tinsley, but three straight three-pointers by Green put Global on top, 28-25, with 2:48 remaining in the half. A Brandon Brown layup with 13 seconds to go made it 34-25 at the break.
"We have to learn how to handle physical basketball, how to handle switches and learn how to execute the offense against tough defenses, not just take one or two passes and jack it up," Finney added.
The Green Wave will open its 2003-04 season on Tuesday evening against Southern University. The Tulane women's team opens the evening at 6 p.m. against Oregon State, followed by the men's contest. Tickets are available by calling 504-861-WAVE.
