NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University hosted four Louisiana schools on Saturday afternoon at the Westfeldt Complex for the Tulane Winter Track & Field Classic, a preseason tune-up for the indoor track season which begins in January.
Tulane had many strong performances, led by junior Camilla Hatlen (Mosjoen, Norway) and freshman Gloria Asumnu (Houston, Texas). Hatlen posted a personal record in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, four and a quarter inches (5.90 meters), while Asumnu won her first-ever 60-meter effort, which was also her collegiate debut race.
"This was a good meet for all of the schools involved," Tulane head coach Heather Van Norman said. "It gives the schools a chance to see where they stand after cross country season and before the Christmas break and indoor seasons. It is a good measuring stick for everyone.
"Despite the cold weather, I was very pleased with our team. It was a very good meet for our team and it is good for Tulane. It was our first home meet in over two years; it gave the Tulane community an opportunity to see us.
Asumnu won the 60-meter dash in her Green Wave debut with an impressive time of 7.53 seconds. The Tulane indoor record in the 60 is 7.56 seconds. Junior Angel Dooley (Columbus, Ohio) finished second in the event with a time of 7.56.
Dooley won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.03, while senior Sheena Garwood (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the 800-meter run at 2:18.21. Sophomore Lisa Green (Marietta, Ga.) and senior Carlyne Pradieu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were second and third in the 800, respectively.
Tulane also shines in the distance events as freshman Bessie Hatch won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:12.74, while junior Mandy Hopper (Charlotte, N.C.) completed the 3,000-meter run in 10:54.81 to capture that title. Lisa Green and senior Birka Wicke (Edermunde, Germany) were second and third behind Hatch in the 1,600.
In addition to Hatlen in the long jump, Tulane had victories in the pole vault and the shot put. Sophomore Lindsey Karlik cleared 10 feet even in the pole vault, while junior Jelena Jurlina won the shot put with a distance of 41 feet, four and a half inches (12.61 meters).
The Green Wave 4x400 relay team of Asumnu, Garwood, Eva Lustigova and Kathy Tek won that event with a time of 4:08.60.
Southeastern Louisiana, Southern (New Orleans), Xavier and Nicholls State also competed in the classic.
Tulane will open its 2004 indoor track season on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational.
