CYPRESS, Texas - Freshman Liliana Alvarez fired a six-over par 150 (76-74) and the Green Wave shot a team 309 in the second round as the Tulane University women's golf team finished third at the Verizon 'MO'Morial Inviational Tuesday afternoon at the Par 72, 6,118-yard Blackhorse Golf Club.
The Green Wave finished just two strokes behind runner-up Arkansas (313-304) and just nine strokes back of tournament champion Baylor (310-300). The third-place finish marked the sixth time during the 2002-03 season that Tulane has finished among the top five tournament finishers.
Other scorers for the Green Wave were sophomore Lindsay Hulwick, who finished tied for 20th with a 155, and one stroke ahead of junior Carolin Landmann (76-80=156). Freshman Jessica Issler was next with a plus-14 158 (80-78) and sophomore Alexis Wooster rounded out the Tulane golfers with a 161 (81-80).
Tulane finished as the top Conference USA team in the field, as TCU was tied for seventh with a 52-over par 628 (316-312) and Louisville was 15th with a plus-56 640.
Baylor's Melanie Hagewood won the individual title with a one-over par 145 (76-74) while Indiana's Karen Dennison was close behind with a plus-three 147.
The Green Wave returns to action on Sunday, March 9 when Tulane travels to Gainesville, Fla. for the Sun Trust Lady Gator Invitational.
