MILWAUKEE, Wis. - - Marquette had four players in double figures as the Golden Eagles posted a 69-55 win over the Tulane women's basketball team at the Al McGuire Center on Friday night.
Marquette won for the sixth time in its last seven outings to improve to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in Conference USA play. Tulane lost its fourth straight and is now 7-10 overall and 0-4 in league action.
Katie O'Grady had 17 points to lead Marquette, while Kelly Schwerman was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line as part of a 14-point performance for the Golden Eagles.
Delacey Joseph led Tulane with 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Jami Montagnino and D'Aundra Henry each had 10 points for the Green Wave.
Marquette took a 38-28 lead into the locker room, thanks in part to a 10-3 edge in free throw attempts. Tulane had a 7-6 lead early before the Golden Eagles used an 11-0 run to build a 10-point cushion. The Golden Eagles pushed its advantage to as many as 14 points, 38-24 at the 1:50 mark before the Wave trimmed the margin to 10 at the break.
The Golden Eagles held Tulane to just one field goal over the first seven minutes of the second half to build a 51-32 lead before the Wave rallied. Tulane slowly trimmed the Marquette lead, cutting it to just eight, 61-53, with just under two minutes remaining. But Marquette scored its final 10 points from the line to seal the win.
Marquette had 39-23 edge in rebounding, which helped translate into a 21-5 edge in second-chance points.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave travel to face league leaders DePaul in Chicago. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CST.
