COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Dorottya Magas and Maria and Darya Ivanov advanced the furthest in the main draws at the ITA Southwest Regional Women's Tennis Championships at Texas A&M University last weekend, but those were not the only impressive performances.
Magas reached the quarterfinals in the main draw of singles, while the Ivanov sisters teamed up to advance to the semifinals in doubles.
However, in the consolation brackets, the Wave also had excellent showings. Jenny Kuhn and Darya Ivanov both advanced to the championship of their bracket and were slated to face each other, but head coach David Schumacher opted to have them not play. In addition, Kuhn and Magas teamed up to win their doubles consolation bracket.
"It [this tournament] was nice for Jenny [Kuhn] and Dory [Magas] who had not played a match this semester [due to weather and illness] to finally get to see some singles competition," Schumacher said. "It took them a little while to get going, but it was nice to see them get their groove back. Clearly, they are two of the top players in the region."
Magas won her first three matches before falling to Kendra Strohm from Texas in the quarterfinals. After losing her first round match in the main draw, Kuhn posted four straight wins in the consolation, including an upset of Texas' Petra Dizdar, the top seed in the tournament and the No. 20 ranked player in the nation. Kuhn is ranked No. 78 in the country.
In doubles action, Maria and Darya Ivanov, who are ranked No. 53 in the nation, won three straight matches before falling in the semifinals to Daniella Covello and Zuzana Cerno from Baylor, who went on to win the championship.
"Maria and Darya have shown evidence of having all the tools necessary to contend at the highest level," Schumacher said. "The team they lost to is a very good team."
Kuhn and Magas, who hold the 43 ranking in the country, fell in the first round of the main draw, but then pulled together for five straight wins to win their bracket of the consolation rounds.
"It was Jenny and Dory's first time playing together and it took them a while to get going," Schumacher said. "But they improved match-by-match and showed they will be a solid team for us in the spring."
