NEW ORLEANS, La. - Freshman Tiffany Brown and sophomore Linda McEachrane posted top times in four events each, and the Green Wave had the best time in all 16 strokes and distances, as the Tulane University women's swim team defeated Arkansas-Little Roc, 170-62, and cross-town foe UNO, 169-40, Saturday afternoon at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
Brown claimed individual titles in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.32) and 100-yard freestyle (53.88) while joining forces with McEachrane, Taylor Emerson and Sarah Dicharry to win the 400 medley (4:00.63), and got some help from Katherine McCoy, Cara Davidoff and McEachrane to post the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.79). In addition to helping the relay teams to a pair of top times, McEachrane also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.56) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.68).
"This meet was a chance for us to relax and not concern ourselves with scores and times," head coach Daniella Irle said. "We swam all off events again today, and it was a lot of fun. Anytime you get to come out, take the pressure off winning off the team, and still improve, that's a good day.
"Our season is 30 weeks from start to finish, and you have to know how to decompress a little bit. We were able to do that today and still have a good, competitive showing."
After claiming at least first and second place in the first nine individual events, the Green Wave swam exhibition heats only over the final two events. With the double-meet sweep, Tulane has now won its last seven matchups to improve to 9-1 on the year. The lone blemish on the Green Wave's slate is a respectable 195-98 loss to No. 17 Florida State back on Oct. 18 in Tallahassee, Fla.
Joining Brown and McEachrane in the victory column were sophomores Leslie Christian and Maureen Quinn, and freshmen Davidoff, Dicharry, Leann Laing and Jamie Shufflebarger. Christian claimed the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:32.86, and Quinn won the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:09.60 on the clock.
Davidoff emerged victorious in the 50-yard freestyle with a 25.08 showing, Laing claimed the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.61 and Shufflebarger won the 100-yard butterfly with 1:03.95 on the scoreboard. Dicharry claimed the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.32, and also posted the top time in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:10.10 in an exhibition heat.
The Green Wave finished went 1-2-3-4 in the 1000 , 200 and 100 free events. In the 1000, sophomore Jessica Hughes posted a time of 10:40.93, freshman Samantha Berdine went 10:48.88 and sophomore Nellie Langeland posted an 11:13.85. Sophomore Nicole Taheri was second in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.79, followed by senior Devlyn Quinn with a 1:59.16 and sophomore Amanda Williams at 1:59.94. In the 100, Devlyn Quinn was second with a 54.92, McCoy was third with a 55.72, and Williams came in fourth with a 56.68.
Tulane returns to action on Friday, Dec. 3, when the Green Wave travels to Ohio for the 2004 Zips Invitational.
