NEW ORLEANS - Tulane used a potent inside game and dominated in the paint as it cruised to an 84-63 win over Prairie View A&M in men's basketball action on Saturday evening at Fogelman Arena.
Tulane (1-2) outscored Prairie View (0-3) by a 48-10 margin in the paint as big man Quincy Davis was a force with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. He also added five rebounds and two blocked shots and the exclamation point of the evening on a thunderous dunk with just over a minute remaining.
"We wanted to establish an inside presence and Quincy led the way," Tulane coach Shawn Finney said. "He was dominant inside and he had great carryover from last game."
Davis had 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting last Sunday against Louisiana Tech.
The Green Wave buried 60.0 percent (33-of-55) of its shots in the victory while holding Prairie View to just 32.3 percent (21-of-65) shooting. Tulane also held a 46-32 advantage in rebounding as all 13 players on the roster scored.
"Once the inside game was established, it opened up our guard play which allowed us to shoot phenomenally tonight," Finney said. "One of our goals is to shoot over 50 percent and hold our opponent below 40. If we can do that, we will have a good chance to win the game."
Tulane jumped to a 42-17 lead at halftime and then pushed that margin to as many as 31. The Panthers used the long-range game (seven second-half three-pointers) to pull within 15 at 76-61 with 2:10 to go, but Vincent Camper knocked down three free throws and Ben Benfield added a pair to make it 81-61 with 1:17 on the clock. Then, after a missed jumper by Prairie View's Oscar Thompson (16 points), Camper rebounded and started the break, throwing a lead pass to Benfield who stretched to catch up to the ball and then flipped it straight back over his head to a streaking Davis, who slammed it home.
"We wanted to come out and play focused basketball; that was a big key," Finney said. "We came out and defended and rebounded and did all the little things early."
In addition to Davis' big man, Marcus Kinzer added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Camper had 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Benfield came off the bench to score 10 points.
"When you look at three point guards playing together and overall, they did well; they had a great stat line," Finney said.
Tulane started all three of its point guards in Camper, Kinzer and freshman Taylor Rochestie (7 points, 3 assists). Their combined totals were 34 points on 13-of-17 shooting, 13 assists and 12 rebounds. They combined for nine turnovers as well as the Wave had 16 in the game.
"We wanted to have less than 14 turnovers,: Finney said. "We had four at the half and 12 in second half. We have to value the ball better; UNO is going to press and play faster, so we have to do a better job there."
Tulane returns to action on Tuesday evening, traveling across town to battle UNO at 7 p.m. at Lakefront Arena.
