NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane tandem of sophomore David Goulet and freshman Jonah Kane-West captured the doubles championship at the Beau Holton Memorial Men's Tennis Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Stadium.
In the singles final, the unranked Goulet battled 33rd-ranked Evghenii Corduneanu from UL-Lafayette to three sets and a tiebreaker, but could not manage the upset, falling 4-6, 7-6, 6-7. Goulet had defeated a pair of ranked opponents to reach the final.
"This was somewhat of a breakthrough for David," Tulane coach Robert Klein said. "He played well; his win over Dmitriy Koch shows he is ready to play at a higher level. We were most happy with how he handled a couple of tough situations. As a coach, I was proud of him."
In the doubles final, Goulet and Kane-West cruised to an 8-3 victory over Marc Pijoan and Ivan Moferdin from Idaho State.
"We have some well-balanced doubles teams and it was good to see Jonah and David pick their play back up to the level they were at earlier in the fall," Klein said. "I think David is one of the finest doubles players in the nation and we were really happy with Jonah to step up."
