NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane men's basketball team tips off an exciting weekend of Green Wave action on Friday evening at 7 p.m., hosting next-door-neighbor Loyola in the Battle of Uptown at Fogelman Arena. It is the first event of "Wear Your Green" Weekend and will include a pep rally for the Green Wave football team which has made an improbable turnaround and will challenge seventh-ranked Louisville on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Superdome.
The final event of the weekend is the Green Wave women's basketball team hosting SEC foe Auburn on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
Tickets for all three games (and all home basketball games) are available by calling 504-861-WAVE. All Tulane men's basketball games are broadcast by the Tulane ISP Radio Network, which includes WTIX AM 690 in New Orleans and WJSH FM 104.7 on the Northshore.
In addition, during Friday night's game one lucky student will win a $250 gift certificate to the Tulane Bookstore, while faculty and staff can purchase a ticket to the basketball game for just $5. The $5 ticket offer is available to ALL fans for Saturday's football contest as the Green Wave plays host to the 2004 Conference USA champions in the biggest game of the season.
On the basketball front, the Wave is looking to rebound from Tuesday's tough one-point loss in its rivalry game with UNO. Marcus Kinzer had an excellent game, knocking down six of his first seven shots, however, his eighth shot at the buzzer was just short as the Wave fell, 55-54.
Under first-year head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando, Loyola has jumped to a 5-3 start. The Wolfpack lost on Wednesday night at Nicholls State, 56-50, to snap a two-game winning streak. Four players are averaging in double figures for Loyola, led by 6-2 guard James Bunn, who has 13.4 points per game, including 29 three-pointers. Zach Tyson, a 6-7 big man, has 11.0 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game.
Tulane leads the all-time series with Loyola, 5-1, including wins in each of the last four years. The series began with a pair of games during the 1971-72 season and did not resume until Shawn Finney's arrival at Tulane in 2000. The closest game in the recent stretch was a 74-58 Green Wave win two seasons ago.
Tulane is led by Kinzer's 12.8 points per game, while big man Quincy Davis has 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Davis leads Conference USA in field-goal percentage at .676 and will be looking to match his performance from last year against the Wolfpack, when he scored 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including five dunks.
Following the Loyola game, the Green Wave will travel to Natchitoches, La., to challenge another state opponent, playing Northwestern State on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised live in New Orleans on Cox Sports TV.
