Kuhn's Clincher Lifts Women's Tennis Past TCU

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team swept doubles then posted wins at three singles matches, all without two of its top four players, to post a 4-3 win over Conference USA rival TCU at the Goldring Tennis Center on Sunday.
Tulane improves to 5-0 to start the season, while TCU falls to 1-4 overall. The Wave were without Julie Smekodub, ranked 10th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Assocition, and Erika Valdes, ranked 71st.
The Green Wave swept all three singles matches to claim an early 1-0 lead. The doubles tandem of Nancy Kockott and Dorotty Magas posted a 9-8 win over the TCU team of Cetnik and Pierce at the No. 1 spot. Jenny Kuhn and junior Maria Ivanov added an 8-4 win over the TCU pair of Aburto and Mancinas on court 2, while Darya Ivanov and Ana Saaibi were 8-3 winners over the Frog duo of Brown and Chay at the No. 3 spot.
Three of the six singles matches went to three sets, with TCU taking two of them, but the Wave held on for the team win. Kockott got the Wave off to a good start with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Karla Mancinas at No. 5 singles. Saaibi added a 7-5, 6-2 win over Gloriann Lopez at the No. 6 spot.
Tulane clinched the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Jenny Kuhn over TCU's Jenn Chay at No. 2 singles. Kuhn, the defending Conference USA Player and Freshman of the Year, is ranked 55th by the ITA.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, as the Green Wave play host to Mississippi at the Goldring Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
