NEW ORLEANS, La. - Michael Kogan earned his 100th career singles victory to lead 26th-ranked Tulane University to its fourth straight victory, a 4-3 triumph over SMU on Sunday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Kogan, a senior and the three-time Player of the Year in Conference USA, notched a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Johan Brunstrom at No. 1 singles to improve his career mark to 100-25. The veteran also teamed with freshman David Goulet for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
A strong afternoon was also turned in by junior Dmitriy Koch who celebrated his 23rd birthday with wins in singles and doubles. The 37th-ranked Koch cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gwinyai Chingoka at No. 2 singles and teamed with Goran Vasiljevic for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
Tulane opened the match by winning the doubles point, but SMU gave the Green Wave a tough fight. The Mustangs defeated Tulane at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles and the match was knotted at three apiece, but freshman Theodoros Angelinos put away Federico Murgier at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-4, to wrap up the win for the Wave.
Tulane returns to action next Saturday, playing at No. 44 Mississippi State at 1 p.m.
