LAS VEGAS, Nev. - - The Tulane women's tennis team split six singles matches, but lost the doubles point, to drop a 4-3 decision to No. 14 Fresno State in the championship of the UNLV Tournament on Sunday.
Tulane, ranked 27th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, suffered its first loss of the season to drop to 9-1 overall. Fresno State won its fifth straight to improve to 6-1 overall.
Fresno State opened the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to claim an early 1-0 lead. Tulane's lone win in doubles came when Maria Ivanov and Jenny Kuhn posted an 8-4 win over the Fresno State team of Sainz and Winterhaller.
In singles play, Tulane got wins on courts three, four and six, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs claimed the dual match win with a three-set thriller on court two.
Darya Ivanov, ranked 58th in singles by the ITA, had little trouble at No. 3 singles, posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Katharina Winterhaller. Fellow freshman, Dorottya Magas, ranked 95th by the ITA, added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vlatka Javanovic at the No. 4 spot. Ana Saaibi added a 6-4, 7-5 win over Courtney Jantz on court six.
However, with the team scored tied at 3-3, sophomore Jenny Kuhn dropped a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 decision to Lucia Tallo at No. 2 singles to give Fresno State the dual match win.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, March 6, as the Green Wave travel to face Florida State in Tallahassee.
