MONTGOMERY, Ala. - For the second year in a row Tulane University was ousted from the prestigious Blue-Gray Men's Tennis Classic by Virginia Commonwealth University. Last year, the Green Wave was upended in the championship, while on Saturday, No. 11 VCU edged the Wave 4-3 in the semifinals. The 16-team Blue-Gray Classic featured 14 nationally-ranked teams, including 10 teams ranked in the top 50.
VCU will meet Harvard in the tournament championship on Sunday. Tulane, ranked No. 40 in the nation, drops to 9-5 with the loss.
With the match tied at three apiece, VCU's Marton Ott took an early lead on Tulane freshman Ted Angelinos at No. 3 singles, winning the first set, 6-3. However, Angelinos battled back to take the second set 6-4. In the third set, the players traded points, but it was Ott who emerged on top, lifting his team to win in a tiebreaker.
Tulane had lost the doubles point, but then earned wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. The Rams won at No. 2 and No. 5 before clinching the match at No. 3.
Michael Kogan earned another big victory, upending 84th-ranked Pedro Nieto at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4. It was Kogan's third straight victory in the tournament. Also winning for the Wave were freshmen David Goulet and Jacobo Hernandez.
Tulane will have an opportunity for revenge against VCU on Friday afternoon as the Green Wave hosts the Rams at Goldring Tennis Stadium at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
