TUCSON, Ariz. - - The Tulane women's tennis team won its second close match in less than 24 hours, posting a 4-3 win over No. 36 Arizona at the Arizona Tennis Courts on Sunday.
Tulane improves to 15-1 overall with the win and is now 10-1 against ranked opponents. The Green Wave are currently ranked 21st by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Arizona falls to 4-9 with the loss.
Tulane took a 1-0 lead in the team scoring with wins on courts two and three in doubles. The Green Wave tandem of Nancy Kockott and Dorottya Magas were 8-5 winners over the Arizona team of Perry and Rochefort at the No. 2 spot, while Maria Ivanov and Jenny Kuhn claimed an 8-5 win over Larocque and Ferreira on court three.
The Wave then got wins on courts three, five and six to take the dual match victory. Julie Smekodub, ranked 41st in singles by the ITA, picked up her first dual match win of the year after an absence due to injury, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Debbie Larocque at the No. 3 singles position. Dorottya Magas added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jessie Rochefort on court five, while Nancy Kockott was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Iza Ferreira at the No. 6 spot.
Tulane returns to action on Fri., April 2, as the Green Wave travel to face No. 11 Texas in Austin. The Green Wave defeated the Longhorns in the first round of last season's NCAA Tournament.
