
Tulane Men's Tennis Shuts Out Southern Miss, 7-0

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane men's tennis team claimed its first shutout victory of the season Friday with a 7-0 win over Conference USA rival Southern Miss at the Goldring Tennis Center. The win was Tulane's third straight and improved the Wave's record to 7-3 on the year.
Tulane, ranked 40th in the country, won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The Green Wave's No. 1 duo of Michael Kogan and David Goulet dispatched Juan Garzon and Reid Bourgeois, 8-1 to open the day and the No. 3 squad of newcomers Jacobo Hernandez and Alberto Sottocorno clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Christopher Rea and Thomas Funke.
Green Wave players won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, highlighted by a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles by freshman Alberto Sottocorno over USM's Southern Miss. Senior Hannu Piiroinen triumphed in a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-5 over Rea. Dmitriy Koch's 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles clinched the victory for Tulane.
Tulane's top singles player, 11th-ranked Michael Kogan, picked up the 104th singles win of his career with a three-set win over Southern Miss' David Canudas, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. The senior from Kfar Saba, Israel picked up the 11th Conference USA Player of the Week Award of his career earlier in the week.
The Green Wave will next take on Wake Forest this Tuesday at the Goldring Tennis Center beginning at 3 p.m.
