NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University women's golf team will aim for its first ever league championship when the team travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to open play in the Conference USA Championship on Monday, April 19 at the par 72, 6,197-yard Shady Oaks Country Club.
The Green Wave enter the championship as the highest ranked team in the league, claiming the No. 19 spot in both the Golfweek and Golfworld poll and No. 23 in the latest poll by Golfstat.com. Tulane has a pair of players ranked among the nation's Top 100 as freshman Mary Ellen Jacobs ranks 50th in the nation and sophomore Liliana Alvarez is No. 52 according to Golfweek Magazine.
"We're excited about this week and we're looking forward to the possibility of being the first Tulane team to win the conference title," head coach Sue Bower said. "We've been in this situation before, though, where we come into the tournament as the highest ranked team and could not get it done for whatever reason. But we've been having some good practice rounds recently and the girls are really focused on the task at hand.
"This will be a great opportunity to gain some momentum going into the NCAA Regionals, but we've got to remain focused on the task at hand, and that's to put up the best effort we can this week at the conference tournament."
Jacobs and Alvarez will be joined by juniors Lindsay Hulwick and Alexis Wooster as well as senior Carolin Landmnn in championship play. Jacobs leads the team with a 75.17 stroke-per-round average, and Alvarez is close behind with a clip of 75.30. Landmann is third with a 76.25 average while Hulwick and Wooster round out the scoring with marks of 77.83 and 78.05, respectively.
Other teams participating in the 2004 championship are TCU, USF, East Carolina, UAB, Cincinnati, Southern Miss and Louisville. TCU enters the tournament ranked 33rd by Golfweek and the Horned Frogs' Brooke Tull is the highest ranked individual participating as the senior comes in at No. 26.
Following Monday's first round, the participating teams will play again on Tuesday before closing out the championship on Wednesday. The first tee times for each day of the championship will be at 8 a.m..
