CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Tulane University fell victim to Harvard University's home court advantage as the Green Wave was eliminated from the 2004 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Murr Center. The match was moved indoors due to rain.
Tulane, ranked No. 19 in the nation, closes its season with a 19-5 record, while 21st-ranked Harvard improves to 22-6.
The Green Wave fell behind early as Harvard snagged the doubles point with a hard-fought 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles. In singles action, Tulane's Alberto Sottocorno and David Goulet both picked up wins, but Harvard had three wins of its own to clinch the match victory.
"Harvard outplayed us," Tulane coach Robert Klein said. "They had great fan support today; their crowd really made a difference."
Harvard had opened the day with a quick victory at No. 2 doubles, but Tulane's 12th-ranked doubles combo of Michael Kogan and Goulet had a 9-7 win at No. 1. The Wave dropped the doubles point, however, when Jacobo Hernandez and Sottocorno were stopped at No. 3 in a 9-7 thriller.
Sottocorno made short work of Jack Li at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win to knot the match at 1-1. However, at No. 5, Hernandez had his 14-match winning streak snapped by Harvard's Martin Wetzel, 3-6, 6-7. Then at No. 1 singles, Tulane's Kogan was upended, 6-2, 6-4, by 36th-ranked David Lingman for a 3-1 Harvard advantage. Kogan is ranked No. 11 in the nation and had not lost in singles since March 9th,
Tulane's Goulet defeated Cliff Nguyen, 7-6, 6-4, but the Crimson wrapped up the match at No. 2 singles when 89th-ranked Jonathan Chu stopped Tulane's 46th-ranked Dmitriy Koch, 6-3, 6-4.
The Green Wave will have three individuals in action at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships beginning May 26th. Kogan and Koch will compete in singles while Kogan and Goulet will team up in the doubles championships.
