HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Junior Lindsay Hulwick and freshman Mary Ellen Jacobs shot five-over par 77s but it was not enough as the Tulane University women's golf team fell short in its bid to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA East Regional Saturday afternoon at the par-72, 6,155-yard Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.
After completing day one in fourth place with a 13-over par 301 on Thursday, the Green Wave shot 313 and 314 in the second and third rounds, respectively, and fell eight strokes shy of a top eight finish. The top eight teams in the three regionals will now advance to play in the 2004 NCAA Championship on May 18-22 at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala.
"This is very disappointing, but in no way does it takes away from the type of season we had," head coach Sue Bower said. "We won two tournaments, were ranked in the Top 25 all year long and accomplished our goal of winning the school's first Conference USA Championship.
"We had five golfers earned all-conference honors, and Mary Ellen was the Freshman of the Year. We came up shy today, and that hurts, but we had a great year and we'll once again use this experience to build on for next year."
Jacobs was the top individual scorer for the Green Wave with a 10-over par 226 (73-76-77), and sophomore Liliana Alvarez was next with a plus-14, 230 (70-79-81) to finish tied for 32nd. Senior Carolin Landmann was tied for 48th with a 236 (79-76-81), Hulwick finished tied for 61st with a 239 (80-82-77) and junior Alexis Wooster came in tied for 74th with a 242 (79-84-79).
Top-ranked Duke won the Regional Championship with a five-over par 869 (286-292-291) to claim a 22-stroke victory over runner-up UNLV (297-297-297=891). Oklahoma State (298-309-299), which tied Florida (310-295-315) with a three-day 920, claimed the final spot on the NCAA Championship out of the East Regional, edging the Gators via tiebreaker. Other teams to advance from the East were North Carolina, Florida State, Wake Forest, Furman and Tennessee.
Tulane was the top Regional finisher from Louisiana as LSU came in 12th with a plus-66, 930 (319-305-306) and Southern was 20th (337-325-344=1006). The Green Wave were also the top-scoring team in Conference USA as TCU finished 12th in the NCAA Central Regional in Normal, Ill., with an 83-over par 935 (308-319-308). Participating as an individual in the East Regional, East Carolina's Adrienne Millican finished tied for ninth overall with a six-over par 222 (71-77-74).
