WACO, Texas - Tulane junior Jacobo Hernandez had a strong start to his 2004-05 season by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Baylor Invitational this weekend. In addition, sophomore David Goulet and freshman Jonah Kane-West teamed up to reach the doubles quarterfinals in the same event.
The Green Wave had five players in action in singles and a pair of doubles teams in the event.
Hernandez showed a penchant for comebacks by opening with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Juan Alatorre from Lamar and then stopping TCU's Jordan Freitas, 1-6, 7-6, 6-0. He topped Northwestern's Christian Tempke in the round of 16 before falling to Yevgeny Supeko from Texas A&M in the quarters.
Goulet also had a strong showing in singles, cruising to a pair of straight-set victories before being upended by Montana State standout Fererico Ueltschi, the fourth seed in the tournament and the 58th-ranked player in the nation. Newcomer Magdy El Midawy recorded a pair of wins in the Green Bracket of the tournament.
Despite losing their opening round matches, sophomore Alberto Sottocorno and freshman West both had solid runs in the consolation brackets. Sottocorno beat UT-Arlington's Niels Buksik in the first consolation round and then upended 36th-ranked Conor Taylor from N.C. State. His run stopped short against Boise State's Thomas Schoeck, the 65th-ranked player inn the nation, in the consolation quarterfinals. Kane-West also won a pair of consolation matches before falling to TCU's Jacopo Tezza in the quarters.
In doubles action, Goulet and Kane-West rolled to two straight victories before coming up against the top-seeded duo in the tournament in the quarterfinals. The Wave duo challenged TCU's Fabrizio Sestini and Rafael Abreu, ranked No. 8 in the nation in doubles, but fell short, 8-6.
Next up for the Green Wave will be the ITA All-American Championships, the first of three national championships for singles and doubles during the 2004-05 season, which take place Oct. 1-10 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
