Tulane Men Play First Road Game on Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Tulane men's basketball team hits the road for the first time for Wednesday's game against Butler...in a manner of speaking. It will be the Wave's first road game, but it is not the first road trip for the Green Wave. Following Hurricane Katrina, the Tulane Athletic Department re-located to four different campuses. The men's basketball team is now based on College Station, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M, 440 miles from New Orleans.
Wednesday's game with Butler tips-off at 6 p.m. (Central time). The game will be available live on the Tulane-ISP Radio Network -- WSKR-AM 1210 Baton Rouge; WJSH-FM 104.7 Hammond/North Shore; KROF-AM 960 Lafayette. Tulane's New Orleans affiliate, WTIX AM 690 remains off the air due to hurricane damages. The radio call is also available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com through the CSTV All-Access package.
"Butler is a dangerous team," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "They are senior-oriented with three or four guys who have played together for three-plus seasons. They are not over-powering, their tallest guy is just 6-6 or 6-7, but they have a classic inside-out combination with three guards and Brandon Polk at center."
Butler enters Wednesday's game with a 2-3 record. After posting a 2-1 record at the BCA Invitational in Laramie, Wyom. (with wins over Alabama State and Lehigh), the Bulldogs lost a pair of tight games to Ohio State (79-69 in overtime) and Michigan (78-74) on the road. Polk, a 6-6 senior forward leads Butler with 16.8 points per game while A.J. Graves, a 6-1 sophomore guard has 14.6 points per game. Senior guard Bruce Horan also hits for double figures with an even 10.0 points per game.
"The scariest thing about Butler is their shooting," Dickerson added. "They will be the best three-point shooting team we will see all year - they made 21 threes in one exhibition game this year."
Tulane has used a balanced attack in its first two games with nine players seeing significant action. Sophomore forward David Gomez, who comes off the bench, has been the team's top stat man thus far, totaling 28 points and 17 rebounds in the first two games. Junior guard Vincent Camper also comes off the bench, and he is scoring in double figures with 12.0 points per game while leading the Wave with 5.5 assists per game. Chris Moore, another junior guard, is also averaging double figures with 11.5 points per game.
"We need to execute in our half-court offense, that is the number one thing for us tomorrow," Dickerson said. "It is only our third game, but our execution must be better in order for us to succeed in this game. Defensively, we need to do a great job of taking away the three-point shot, which is tough because they will have four three-point shooters on the court at all times."
Following Wednesday's game, the Green Wave heads straight to Iowa to play in the Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa City. Tulane meets Valparaiso in the first round on Friday, while host Iowa plays Fairfield. The championship and consolation will be played Saturday.
