ORANGE, N.J. - The Tulane University basketball team has ventured back to the north for another non-league showdown as the Green Wave battles Seton Hall on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. (Central) at Continental Airlines Arena.
Tulane has already played one game in Indianapolis and a pair in Iowa. On Saturday evening, the Green Wave will have dinner in New York City.
Sunday's game will be available live on the Tulane-ISP Radio Network - WIST-AM 690 New Orleans; WSKR-AM 1210 Baton Rouge; WJSH-FM 104.7 Hammond/North Shore; KROF-AM 960 Lafayette. The radio call is also available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com through the CSTV All-Access package.
The Wave defeated TCU, 56-52, last Wednesday evening, despite shooting just 42 percent from the field and turning the ball over a season-high 26 times. On the defensive end, the hustling Greenies held TCU to just 27 percent shooting.
"It was an ugly first half for both teams," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "But in the second half, we gained our composure, hit big shots and ran good offense. Our defense keeps getting better; we got really stingy in the second half and that won the game for us."
Chris Moore keyed the Wave offensive attack, scoring a career-high 22 points. The junior guard nailed four three-pointers, including the go-ahead bucket with 1:53 to go. However, after Moore, the rest of the Green Wave hit just 1-of-10 three-point attempts.
"We need to improve our three-point shooting by taking better shots," Dickerson said. "We aren't good enough to take contested threes - not too many teams are. We need to improve our shot selection and our passing, which can free guys for better shots."
Seton Hall comes into Sunday's contest with a 5-2 overall record, however the Pirates are 5-0 at home. Their losses have come to Duke and Richmond while they own wins over Manhattan, Marist, St. Peter's, Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth. A veteran inside-outside combo leads Seton Hall as Donald Copeland, a 5-10 senior guard, has 13.6 points per game and 6-8 senior forward Kelly Whitney scores an even 13 points per game. Eight other players average in double figures in minutes for the Pirates.
"Seton Hall has four or five guards that are capable of great games," Dickerson said. "Our perimeter defense needs to be as good or better than it was against TCU; Copeland is having a career season and Whitney is a physical and tough presence that we haven't seen a lot of this year.
"If the effort and intensity we played with against TCU can carry over, it will give us a chance to win any game. Defense is one of those things - no matter who you play, you can win with good defense."
The Green Wave, which began final exams on Friday at Texas A&M, its adopted home for the semester, plays one more game in College Station, hosting Division III St. Edwards on Monday., Dec. 19.
Tulane returns to New Orleans prior to Christmas and will host Richmond at Fogelman Arena on Dec. 27th at 7 p.m. Tickets for that game as well as season tickets are available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
