COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Despite shooting 59.2 percent from the field, Tulane turned the ball over a season-high 30 times and missed 16-of-36 free throws as St. Edward's pulled off a 91-83 overtime victory over the Green Wave on Monday evening at Reed Arena on the campus of Texas A&M.
St. Edward's (7-3) buried 8-of-9 free throws in overtime to hold off the Green Wave, which also turned the ball over three times in the extra stanza.
"We lost to a team that was better than we were tonight," Tulane coach Dave Dickerson said. "They outplayed us for 40 minutes. We've got to get better across the board. We can't commit 30 turnovers and shoot 55 percent from the line and expect to win."
Trailing 84-83, Tulane (2-6) had a missed three-pointer by Andrew Garcia rebounded by David Gomez. However, Donnie Stith was whistled for an offensive foul and the Hilltoppers took over with 1:02 on the clock.
St. Edward's big man Daniel Pierre hit a pair of free throws at the 49.3 mark and then Tulane missed a pair of its own to symbolize the entire game. The Hilltoppers were 28-of-35 (80.0 percent) from the line in the game while Tulane was just 20-of-36 (55.6 percent).
After the Wave's missed shots, Pierre hit another pair from the line to make it 88-83 and Wave freshman Daniel Puckett was off the mark with a three from the top of the key. Pierre then clinched the victory with two more foul shots with 11.7 seconds left to make it 90-83.
"The bottom line is winning the game," Dickerson said. "We couldn't get it done. Quincy [Davis] with a little more intensity, but we still need more from him. We've got to step up and make free throws."
Tulane trailed 79-75 with 1:59 to go in regulation when Matt Wheaton found Quincy Davis inside for his third dunk of the game at the 1:33 mark. The Hilltoppers had two opportunities to make it a two-possession game, but a missed jumper and a turnover handed the Wave the ball with a two-point deficit and 28 clicks on the clock.
An interior pass by the Wave was knocked loose by St. Edward's, but Garcia recovered and found Matt Wheaton who sliced inside and scored in traffic with 6.5 seconds to go to knot the game at 79.
The Hilltoppers could not convert in the final seconds.
Tulane was led by Davis, who scored 21 points while hitting 8-of-9 shots. Gomez had 19 points and Chris Moore and Ryan Williams had 12 and 11, respectively. The Wave converted a season-high 59.2 percent (29-of-49) of its shots, but St. Edward's scored 38 points off the 30 Wave turnovers.
St. Edward's was led by David Lunn's 24 points, including 13-of-16 from the charity stripe. Shawn Weinstein scored 18 with five steals, while Pierre and Chavon Farmer each scored 11. The Hilltoppers had 18 turnovers and hit 27-of-64 (42.2 percent) field goal attempts.
A tightly contested first half saw seven ties and 10 lead changes, but a Ryan Williams three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Wave a 41-37 edge at the break. Tulane missed six of its first nine foul shots, but settled down, hitting five of its last six in the first half.
"The silver lining is that we are going back to New Orleans and back to Fogelman Arena," Dickerson said. "Hopefully that will bring us some energy."
The Green Wave is due back in New Orleans on Dec. 24 - 118 days later than it expected to convene in its home city. The Wave will host Richmond at Fogelman Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Tickets are available by calling 504-247-1240 or by visiting www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
