NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball team returns to Fogelman Arena for the Tulane Invitational, the 11th straight year the Green Wave have played host to a holiday tournament in New Orleans. Tulane, 4-2 on the season, take on Samford, 7-1, in the first game Wednesday, followed by an all-Ohio match-up as Dayton and Toledo meet.
Tulane dropped an 89-60 decision to No. 3 LSU in Baton Rouge before breaking for the Christmas holidays. Prior to that game, the Green Wave women became the first collegiate or professional team to play in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina when they defeated Central Connecticut State, 72-60, on December 18 in Fogelman Arena.
The Green Wave is led by sophomores Jennifer Sands and Nikki Luckhurst, who enter the game averaging 13.0 and 12.3 points per game, respectively. Freshman Kendra Barnes is the Wave's top rebounder with 5.8 per game while her classmate, Ashley Langford, has run the Tulane offense from the point guard position where she averages 6.0 assists per contest.
Samford enters Thursday's game on a seven-game winning streak after dropping their first game of the season. The Bulldogs are scoring 71.1 points per game and are led by Alex Munday, who scores 15.5 points per game while pulling down a team-leading 6.9 rebounds per contest.
Toledo, 5-3, and Dayton, 6-3, share more than their Ohio roots, both teams are coming off a pre-holiday loss to Cincinnati.
Tickets for the Tulane Invitational are available at the doors of Fogelman Arena beginning at 5 p.m., or can be purchased on-line.
