NEW ORLEANS, La. - In a hard-fought contest which came down to the third set of the No. 6 singles match, 37th-ranked Mississippi State upended 21st-ranked Tulane in men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Center.
With the match tied at 3-3, Mississippi State sophomore Arnaud Roussel prevailed over Green Wave freshman Jonah Kane-West at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Both players battled cramps during the late points of the long match.
All three of the losses for Tulane (6-3) this year have been by 4-3 scores; and all three have been to nationally-ranked opponents.
The Green Wave took an early lead on the Bulldogs by winning the doubles point. Dmitriy Koch and Alberto Sottocorno had an 8-4 win at No. 1 and David Goulet and Kane-West won at No. 3, 8-3, for the 1-0 advantage.
Tulane lost at No. 2 singles to even the match at one, but Ted Angelinos posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 and 59th-ranked Dmitriy Koch notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 for a 3-1 Green Wave lead.
However, Sottocorno and Hernandez both dropped their first matches of the year as the Bulldogs again tied the match. And then at the sixth singles flight, Roussel clinched the road victory.
Tulane returns to action on Feb. 25-27, hosting the Conference USA Shootout at the Goldring Tennis Center.
