BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Alison Walshe shot a one-over par 73 and the Green Wave fired their second consecutive 297 as the Tulane University women's golf team finished second at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic Sunday afternoon at the par-72, 6,276-yard University Club.
Walshe finished third in the individual standings with a three-day, one-over par 217 (69-75-73), and was one of three Tulane golfers to trim strokes off their day-two scores. As a team, the Green Wave shot a plus-32 896 (302-297-297) to finish 17 strokes behind host LSU (296-290-293=879) for the team title.
"This was a good tournament for us," head coach Sue Bower said. "LSU was able to use their familiarity with the course to their advantage, but we did a very good job all weekend and kept the pressure on them. Several of the girls shot better as the tournament progressed, and that shows how hard they're working. I'm pleased with our overall performance, and this will help prepare us for the Conference USA Championship and the NCAA postseason."
Senior Lindsay Hulwick finished tied for 13th in the individual race with a seven-over par 223 (75-73-75), and junior Liliana Alvarez was five strokes back (78-72-78=228) to finish the tournament tied for 23rd. Junior Jessica Issler was next for Tulane with a plus-16 232 (80-77-75) and senior Alexis Wooster rounded out the Green Wave scorers with a 234 (80-80-74) to finish tied for 44th.
Sophomore Mary Ellen Jacobs, who participated in the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic as an individual, finish tied for ninth with a six-over par 222 (79-70-73).
Vanderbilt's Chris Brady won the individual title with a five-under par 211 (72-68-71) and Rebecca Kuhn of LSU was next with a two-under par 214 (72-70-72). Following Walshe's third-place showing, Amanda Mathis of Mississippi State (76-67-75) and Adrienne White of Louisville (73-74-71) finished tied for fourth with two-over par 218s.
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, March 25, when Tulane travels to Athens, Ga., to participate in the Liz Murphy Collegiate.
