NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane men's tennis team had played five nationally-ranked opponents entering Saturday's match with No. 40 Northwestern. Four of those matches were decided by 4-3 scores. Therefore it was no surprise when the match was decided, 4-3. This time, the Green Wave came out on top, improving to 9-3 on the year and 3-2 against ranked foes, with the victory at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Tulane won the doubles point and then added singles victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions. However it was sophomore Alberto Sottocorno who provided the clincher, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 5 singles over Northwestern's Christian Tempke.
The Green Wave had a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles by freshman Jonah Kane-West and then added another win when sophomore David Goulet notched a 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.
In doubles play, Tulane continued to succeed. The Wave has dropped the double point just once this season and on Saturday, all three doubles teams posted wins. Senior Dmitriy Koch and Sottocorno won at No. 1, junior Jacobo Hernandez and sophomore Ted Angelinos won at No. 2 and Goulet and Kane-West posted a victory at No. 3.
Tulane returns to action next weekend, playing at the prestigious Blue-Gray Invitational in Montgomery, Ala.
