NEW ORLEANS, La. - Junior utility athlete Brian Bogusevic was named one of 16 semifinalists for the 2005 Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Thursday.
Bogusevic advanced to the semifinal list after leading the Green Wave in ERA (2.60), innings pitched (97.0) and opponent batting average (.235), while tying for the team lead in wins (10) and ranking second in strikeouts with 98. While his time at the plate has been limited due to an early-season hamstring pull, he has also made good at the plate where he is hitting .351 with seven doubles and 19 RBI in 94 at-bats.
Individual honors are nothing new for Bogusevic as the native of Oak Lawn, Ill., was named Preseason All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, and was the early choice for Conference USA Player of the Year. In addition, Bogusevic has been named to the watchlists for the Golden Spikes, which is awarded to college baseball's top player by USA Baseball, and the Roger Clemens Award, which is given to the nation's top pitcher.
In addition, Bogusevic, has been named C-USA Pitcher of the Week twice and garnered the honor from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on two other occasions. He also claimed Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week recognition from Collegiate Baseball and CSTV Student-Athlete of the Week from College Sports Television on Feb. 14.
Bogusevic is joined on the list fellow Conference USA pitcher Lance Broadway of TCU and LSU outfielder Ryan Patterson. Rounding out the semifinalists are Miami pitcher Cesar Carillo, Coastal Carolina utility athlete Mike Costanzo, Oregon State outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon, Georgia Tech shortstop Tyler Greene, Tennessee ace Luke Hochevar, Texas shortstop Seth Johnston, Southern Cal hurler Ian Kennedy, Ole Miss outfielder Brian Pettway, Florida State outfielder Shane Robinson, Cal State Fullerton southpaw Ricky Romero, Alabama outfielder Gabe Scott and Alcorn State second baseman Corey Wimberley.
The Dick Howser trophy, given in memory of former Florida State University All-American shortstop and Major League player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage - qualities exemplified by Howser during his life.
The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of the voting, and the winner will be announced at the College World Series on Friday, June 17, at 10 a.m. (CDT).
Bogusevic and the Green Wave return to action on Friday, May 20, when Tulane plays game one of a doubleheader against C-USA foe TCU beginning at 2 p.m. (CDT) at Turchin Stadium. Game two of the series will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener, and the two teams close out the regular season on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
